Computational Grids: Why we need them and what are they anyway?

David Britton

Imperial College

Hundreds of millions of dollars has been spent worldwide over the last couple of years to start the development of `Grids' for pure sciences such as Physics and Astronomy, for applied sciences such as Medicine and Earth Observation, and for industrial and government applications. This non-technical colloquim will attempt to explain why they are needed and what distinquishes them from more conventional paradigms such as distributed computing or large computing centres.
