Connecting Radio Pulsar Phenomena with the Emission Physics

Joanna Rankin

University of Vermont

Pulsar radiation exhibits a number of fascinating phenomena, such as core/cone emission, subpulse drifting, nulling and mode changing. The physical mechanisms behind these phenomena have remained enigmatic in part because it has proven difficult to see how they can be traced to some common origin. But exciting progress is now being made in understanding where the radiation is emitted and how it is affected by propagation effects in the magnetosphere. The talk will review some basic “pulsarology” and then discuss recent efforts to understand some of the phenomena and the physical processes responsible or them.
