This colloquium will be an overview of Finance from the point of view of a Physicist. We will start with what financial markets accomplish for society and how they have recently been transformed by science and technology. We will then visit a few fundamental concepts about trading, and we will end by reviewing the attempts of certain influential thinkers to understand how order emerges out of the chaotic decisions of millions of investors of varying competence.
