Nuclear physics research at the Centre for Energy Research and Development (CERD), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile -Ife, Nigeria started in the late 1970s with the mandate of providing research and training in the area of peaceful applications of nuclear energy and applied nuclear techniques for national economic development. Tremendous progress has been made in the area of providing a database of natural radioactivity levels in major parts of the country and the investigation of some naturally occurring minerals for application as thermoluminescent dosimeters. In the last two decades low energy nuclear reactions have been explored to characterize a wide variety of materials for various applications using the 1.7MV tandem accelerator of the CERD. The facility has served institutions acros s the length of breadth of Nigeria for research and training purposes. Very recently, new effort is being made to probe nuclear structure properties of nuclei across the periodic table using direct and inverse kinematics techniques. The CERD is planning to establish a very strong collaboration with McGill through nEXO.
