The geometry of physics (Winter 2017)

This course is a continuation of what we did during the Fall 2016 (see below). We are reading the rest of the book, so starting at chapter 9. This course is official and the number to register is PHYS 607.

The format is exactly the same as last semester. We meet on Tuesdays from 1:00 tp 2:30 in the boardroom and on Thursdays from 1:30 to 3:00 in room 326. The schedule can be found here.

The geometry of physics (Fall 2016)

This is the page with information about the reading course that we are organizing this semester. We will read the first half of the book "The Geometry of Physics" by Theodore Frankel and hopefully continue with the second half in the winter. The main topics covered are geometry, topology and Lie groups with applications to physics.

The meetings are on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:30 in room 326 of the physics building.

Format of the course

We meet twice a week and each meeting in separated in two parts: summary of the readings and problem solving. Two different people lead each part, following the schedule bellow. The person who discusses the readings that everyone has to do for a given meeting mostly summarizes the important points and problems of the sections. He does not necessarily give a detailed talk based on the book. The second part consists of someone solving his favorite problems (max 2 because of time) from the readings of the previous meetings. We solve problems in a delayed manner to leave time for people to do them after having discussed the material. The problem solver of a given meeting tells the group at least to days in advance which of the problems he will solve.

Schedule

The schedule of the readings can be found here with the leading person's names and the problems to do.
